Andrea Shaw, founder of The Circle of Trust, delivered her talk “Enough Is Enough” at TEDx Cairo. It opens with a hard question: why do women spend so much of every day tearing themselves down, and what would it take to flip that script.
8x
Women criticize themselves an average of eight times a day.
97%
Of women report having negative body thoughts — dozens of what Andrea calls "inner gut punches" before we've even gone to bed.
About the Talk
Andrea’s question to the room: what if we flipped that script and became our own best cheerleaders instead? She makes her case through three stories.
STORY ONE
About the Talk
Born into deep poverty in rural Mississippi, neglected and abused as a child, told at every turn she wasn’t good enough. Andrea points out that by age 14, Oprah had endured more pain than many people face in a lifetime, and yet she chose to listen to her own voice, decided enough was enough, and refused to let her past dictate her future. She went on to become one of the most powerful voices of her generation.
STORY TWO
Clara Hughes
The only Canadian athlete in Olympic history to win multiple medals in both the summer and winter games. From the outside, she had everything: medals, fame, a nation’s admiration. Behind that, she was living with deep depression for years, hiding it out of shame because, as Andrea puts it, champions aren’t supposed to struggle. Clara eventually decided enough was enough, spoke openly about her mental health, and in doing so freed herself and, Andrea says, countless others.
STORY THREE
Andrea's Own Story
Her first career was as a registered nurse, which she loved, even as a quiet voice of self-doubt stayed with her. She became a high school teacher next, and loved that too, but still couldn’t unmute that same voice of doubt. From there she moved into sports marketing, helping lead the organizing effort for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Vancouver. After ten years on that work, with the games behind her, she opened her own company on July 1, 2010, full of excitement and fear in equal measure, with her savings, her future, and her reputation on the line.
Four months later, she was diagnosed with cancer.
Andrea describes spiraling into a dark place of doubt and despair before reaching a turning point. Watching her children at home and her team still working hard at the office, she decided enough was enough. She gathered her kids and told them she had news, both bad and good: the bad news was she had cancer, the good news was that cancer did not have her. She says that declaration gave her back her worth, her power, and her sight. She stood on stage cancer free, with her company having just celebrated its 15th birthday, not as the woman who once pulled herself down, but as the woman who chose to lift herself up.
The Core Message
Andrea closes by turning the statistics from her opening into a challenge. She hopes to move the number of women dealing with negative self-talk from 97 percent down, and the number acting as their own best cheerleader up toward 100 percent. Her closing line makes the goal personal:
I’m Andrea, and my dream is to empower all of you, one more woman at a time.
There’s also a quieter detail worth noting. Partway through her own story, Andrea says she “couldn’t unmute” her voice of doubt, a direct echo of Unmuted, the theme of the TEDx Cairo event itself.
Why "Unmuted" Was the Right Stage for This Message
TEDx Cairo built its event around the theme Unmuted, giving voice to ideas and people too often talked over, silenced, or asked to shrink. Andrea’s talk fits that theme closely: a woman who spent years unable to unmute her own inner voice of doubt, until a health crisis forced the issue.
Why Event Organizers Book This Talk
Organizers who bring Andrea in after seeing her TEDx talk are typically looking for:
- Third party validated credibility, a published TEDx talk, not just a self produced reel
- A message grounded in real statistics and real stories, not generic motivational language
- A speaker willing to talk openly about a serious personal health crisis and what she learned from it
- A talk that audiences continue talking about, sharing, and acting on well after the event ends
